North Carolina Executor Checklist

Being named executor or personal representative is an honor, but it can also be overwhelming. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process.

1. Locate the Will & Important Documents

  • Last Will & Testament
  • Death certificates (order 5-10 copies)
  • Trust documents (if any)
  • Life insurance policies, bank & investment statements, Deeds, car titles, business records 

2. Open the Estate

  • File the Will with the Clerk of Superior Court in the county where the decedent lived.
  • Apply for Letters Testamentary (or Administration) to officially be appointed executor. 

3. Notify Necessary Parties

  • Heirs & beneficiaries
  • Banks & investment firms
  • Mortgage companies & creditors
  • Social Security & insurance companies

4. Inventory the Estate

  • Make a detailed list of all assets (home, vehicles, personal items).
  • Get appraisals for real property if needed. 

5. Pay Debts & Expenses

  •  Keep a clear record of all bills paid.
  • Maintain a separate estate checking account for transparency.
  • File any final income or estate tax returns. 

6. Prepare the Home for Sale

  •  Remove or store personal items.
  • Consider an estate sale or donation.
  • Handle minor repairs & staging for best market value.


  • Once debts are paid, distribute remaining assets per the Will.
  • File a final accounting with the Clerk of Court.

7. Distribute Assets & Close the Estate

  • Once debts are paid, distribute remaining assets per the Will.
  • File a final accounting with the Clerk of Court.
